ACC Comments on ONC Draft Strategy to Reduce Health IT and EHR Administrative Burdens

On Jan. 28, the ACC submitted comments to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in response to a draft strategy for Reducing Regulatory and Administrative Burden Relating to the Use of Health Information Technology (IT) and Electronic Health Records (EHRs).

Within the strategy, ONC identified three primary goals: reduce the effort and time required to record information in EHRs during care delivery, reduce the effort and time required to meet regulatory reporting requirements and improve the overall usability of EHRs. The College's comments provided recommendations for how ONC could achieve these goals by collaborating with Health IT and EHR vendors to standardize data and documentation processes and more.

To increase effective, high-quality patient care and reduce administrative burdens related to Health IT and EHR use, the ACC urges all stakeholders to optimize EHR workflow designs, increase operational efficiency and adopt consensus methods and standards that allow effortless data transmission, interpretation and manipulation to ensure interoperability on all medical devices and platforms, as mapped out in the College's Health Policy Priorities.
