FDA Update: Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities Affecting ICDs
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety communication alert for Medtronic cardiac implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-Ds) that a cybersecurity vulnerability had been found in the wireless technology for communication between the implantable cardiac devices, clinic programmers and home monitors. Medtronic is updating the software with a patch and the FDA is not aware of any harm from the vulnerability.
If you suspect or experience a problem with these devices, health care professionals are encouraged to file a voluntary report through MedWatch, the FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting program.
