Michigan Becomes First State To Ban Flavored E-Cigarettes

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed legislation classifying e-cigarettes as tobacco products, making Michigan the first state to ban flavored e-cigarettes. This move is due to grassroots advocacy on part of the ACC Michigan Chapter and others, who have been working tirelessly for the past year to push this legislation.

The ban is effective immediately. However, businesses have 30 days to comply with the order. "As governor, my number one priority is keeping our kids safe," Whitmer says.

The Michigan state legislature passed a bill in June reducing youth access to e-cigarettes and non-traditional nicotine products, but the ACC Michigan Chapter, Governor Whitmer and others believed it did not go far enough. Since then, grassroots efforts have been underway to encourage passage of this new bill, including a signed letter of support.

Reducing youth access to tobacco products is a state and national priority for the ACC. Read more on the College's tobacco efforts, specifically those related to Tobacco 21 legislation, which has now taken hold in 485+ cities across 29 states, most recently in New York and Ohio.
