Last month, the ACC attended a policy summit led by the Partnership to Empower Physician-Led Care, an organization focused on supporting independent practices in the transition to value-based payment. Clinicians, lawmakers, legislative staff and other stakeholders gathered to discuss best practices, successes and increased involvement for physicians in value-based care models.

Of note, a panel discussion focused on challenges in value-based care contracting with independent practices and panelists explained that practices typically must redo their financial and clinical processes to find success under new models. They also noted that challenges to implementing value-based care models include monitoring patient results outside of the practice, tracking financial outcomes and meeting different quality reporting quotas.

The summit concluded by discussing solutions for increased participation in these models such as focusing on new technology and increasing data access for providers. Specifically, the discussion focused on the creation of a collective data source to increase and encourage engagement. A closing presentation at the summit looked at new software that could combine both clinical and financial data from a variety of sources to give providers actionable checklists to close care gaps, leading to a full understanding of value-based care.
