ACC’s New Community Explores the Benefits and Limitations of Anticoagulants

This post was authored by Robert Giugliano, MD, SM, FACC, editor-in-chief of the Anticoagulation Management CardioSource Clinical Community.

Last year the ACC launched the Anticoagulation Initiative, a comprehensive quality effort to help facilitate a greater understanding of treatments and practice patterns in patients with atrial fibrillation, particularly given an increasing number of new anticoagulant treatment options entering the marketplace. The initiative is a multidisciplinary effort that addresses gaps in knowledge in order to improve the quality of care in patients with an indication for anticoagulation.

The initiative also serves as an umbrella for the growing number of ACC tools targeted for use by cardiovascular professionals and their patients to close the long-standing gap in anticoagulation use.  Today we are launching one of these tools, the Anticoagulation Management Clinical Community on CardioSource.org.  I am delighted to serve as the editor of this community.  We aim to explore the benefits and limitations of anticoagulants across the broad range of disease states, including (but not limited to) atrial fibrillation; venothrombolism prevention and treatment; and acute coronary syndromes.  The community also features relevant news articles, case challenges, hot topics, basics of anticoagulation, interactive discussions, a question of the month and clinical resources.

In the upcoming months we will cover several areas of high clinical interest, such as use of triple antithrombotic therapy, evaluation and management of excess anticoagulation, the risks of transitioning between anticoagulants, and much more.

We intend for this community to provide valuable information that the clinician will find useful in his/her practice.  Additionally, there are multiple ways to provide feedback to the community, so I welcome you to make your voice heard.  For more information, visit anticoagulation.cardiosource.org.
