She Needed a Hero, So That's What She Became

"No, I would like a female interventional cardiologist to do my heart catheterization. There are so few of them in this profession, so they must have to work much harder and have to be much better to get where they are," said a 67-year-old male patient when my office offered to reschedule his heart catheterization with one of my extremely talented and experienced male colleagues who had an earlier availability. My first reaction was a pleasant startle, a gratifying inquisitiveness almost immediately followed by an ardent desire to investigate the facts in that statement for myself. Read more on

Educational Needs in Cardio-Oncology

There has been a rapid growth in the field of cardio-oncology over the last several years, including an emerging focus on this topic by the ACC and other cardiology societies. This is in large part driven by advances in cancer treatment with increasing longevity in the oncologic population. Currently, there are an estimated 15.5 million cancer survivors in the U.S., a number that is projected to grow to more than 20 million by 2026, contributing to a large at-risk cohort for downstream post-chemotherapy and post-radiation cardiotoxicity. The third episode in a new podcast series developed by ACC President C. Michael Valentine, MD, FACC, Practice Made Perfect, is now live. In this episode, Valentine and Linda Gates, director of corporate compliance at St. Vincent Medical Group in Indianapolis, provide an overview of coding and documention. This informative podcast series is intended help clinicians sharpen non-clinical competencies through a series of expert discussions on topics surrounding career and leadership development. Early Career Travel Awards to the 2018 Legislative Conference

The ACC has made a select number of travel awards available to cover expenses for Early Career members to travel to ACC's 2018 Legislative Conference, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, in Washington, DC. The award provides reimbursement funding for airfare, lodging and other expenses up to $1,000 for travel to and from the conference. Click here to apply. The deadline for applications is June 25.
