ACC Speaks For PAD Therapies at CMS Meeting

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) convened a Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) to inform future/potential decision making of coverage on July 22 regarding patients with lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The panel of physicians and other experts voted on questions considering the scientific evidence of existing interventions in asymptomatic, intermittent claudication and critical limb ischemia patients. ACC Peripheral Vascular Disease Council Chair Herbert D. Aronow, MD, MPH, FACC, attended the meeting on behalf of the ACC. In collaboration with other medical specialty and patient groups, he and others summarized the evidence and supported various therapies in the different patient populations. CMS indicated an intention to rely upon the information presented at the meeting to take national coverage action in the PAD space in the next year.
