Newborn Screening Bill Gains Momentum in Congress

Recently, the House of Representatives passed the Newborn Screening Saves Lives Reauthorization Act of 2013 (H.R. 1281), a bill that would support state efforts for newborn screening, including for critical congenital heart defects (CCHD). This is a crucial step forward for uniform screening of CCHD, as a handful of states still lack legislation requiring pulse oximetry testing. The bill also authorizes Health Resources and Services Administration grants for states and providers over the course of the next few years and the hope is that some of these funds could be used to advance CCHD screening. Read about recent CCHD legislative wins on the state level.
