ACC.18 will close this evening with the time-honored tradition of Convocation. This year’s ceremony will shine a spotlight on transition and renewal.

Presided over by outgoing ACC President Mary Norine Walsh, MD, FACC, the Convocation Ceremony will usher in hundreds of new ACC Fellows and Associates and honor recipients of awards, including ACC’s Distinguished Awards, as well as recipients of ACC/Merck Research Fellowships, the ACC/William F. Keating, Esq. Endowment Career Development Award, ACC Presidential Career Development Award, the William W. Parmley Young Author Awards for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), the Young Author Achievement Awards for JACC Journals, and the ACC Young Investigator Awards.

In addition, Convocation will recognize ACC’s newest Leadership Academy graduates. Launched in 2014, Leadership Academy provides Early Career and Fellow in Training members with peer-to-peer leadership training and mentoring. This year’s cohort includes 16 participants.

“By pursuing the designation of AACC and FACC cardiovascular professionals have signaled an interest in engaging with the ACC in a new role and with a new level of involvement,” said Walsh. “I’m looking forward to formally welcoming these dedicated individuals to the ACC, while also honoring the many new and emerging leaders whose contributions to our profession are helping us achieve our vision of a world where innovation and knowledge optimize cardiovascular care and outcomes.”

The evening also marks the official installation of new ACC leaders, including the new president. Tonight, Walsh will pass the presidential chain to C. Michael Valentine, MD, FACC, an interventional cardiologist at Centra Health in Lynchburg, VA. Valentine is a graduate of the University of Georgia, as well as the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his medicine and cardiology training at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Valentine has served the College in many roles, including ACC Treasurer and Secretary, as well as chair of the ACC Board of Governors, and governor of ACC’s Virginia Chapter. Click here to learn more about Valentine.
