CDC Director Endorses Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine For Children Ages 5-11

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH, on Nov. 2 endorsed a recommendation from the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that children 5 to 11 years receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The ACIP recommendation comes less than a week after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an emergency use authorization allowing children ages 5 to 11 to receive the Pfizer vaccine. The endorsement from the director expands vaccine recommendations to about 28 million U.S. children and allows providers to begin vaccinating them as soon as possible.

Distribution of pediatric vaccinations began this week, with plans to scale up distribution during the week of Nov. 8. The Pfizer vaccine will be available in pediatric doses though thousands of pediatric health care providers, pharmacies, federally qualified health centers and other providers.
