Course Overview/Statement of Need
The ACC and its Diversity and Inclusion Initiative are excited to present the expanded Clinical Trials Research: Upping Your Game program, intended to ensure diversity of thought, experience, and perspective in clinical research.
The program includes three two-day sessions – available to CTR learners virtually or at ACC's Heart House in Washington, DC, – a series of complimentary webinars, professional development exercises, and crafting an original research proposal, to be considered for a research award. Participants will learn about clinical trials research, network with nationally recognized clinical trialists, investigators, regulatory stakeholders and industry leaders, and develop a personal career action plan. Selected CTR learners will receive support for travel expenses, including coach airfare and two-night hotel for each of the three in-person sessions in Washington, DC.
In line with the goals of the ACC's Diversity and Inclusion Initiative, this program is intended to increase the number of individuals historically underrepresented in cardiology (URCs) who serve as leaders in cardiovascular clinical trials research. (URCs are currently defined by the ACC as – women, African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics). Through this effort, the ACC strives to ensure that the evidence base includes data more closely reflecting the demographics of actual cardiovascular patients.

Target Audience
If you are a cardiologist or PhD trained researcher interested in increasing your knowledge and participation as investigators and leaders in cardiovascular clinical trials research, you are encouraged to apply. Please see details below for submitting an application for consideration. Selected learners must commit to attending all sessions.

Session Format and Highlights
Program details include:
- Three sessions – available virtually or in-person at ACC's Heart House in Washington, DC
- Series of webinar presentations and discussions
- Opportunities to work with a mentor from the CTR faculty and Steering Committee
- CTR learners will develop a research proposal and compete for research award
Topics include:
- Overview of drug and device development process
- Anatomy, structure, funding and organization of clinical trials research
- Critical role of FDA and other regulatory bodies
- How to access clinical trial leadership roles
- How to excel as a clinical trials researcher
- Future of clinical trials research
- Finding funding to match your proposed research
- Identify and refine research questions, establish networking and collaborations
- Components of a fundable grant or industry research proposal
- Research data sources and resources
- Fundamentals of data analysis
- Creating a personal action plan for a clinical trials career
Eligibility Criteria
ACC members meeting the following qualifications are invited to apply for the session Clinical Trials Research: Upping Your Game.
- Cardiologists who have completed CV specialty training or PhD educated researchers who have completed post-doctoral training
- Current ACC member
- Participated in at least one ACC program within previous 12 months (including, but not limited to, the Annual Scientific Session, ACC educational course(s), the ACC's Legislative Conference, etc.)
- Applicants must be available to attend all three sessions. The sessions will be available virtually or in -person (Washington, DC)
Selection
Applicants will be selected based on:
- Personal statement describing appropriate and realistic clinical trials research goals given current career stage, and clear appreciation of how the program can help them advance these goals
- Strong letter of support from supervisor (department chair, division chief, or dean)
- Preference will be given to qualified individuals historically underrepresented in cardiology (women, African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics)
Approved applicants will receive their formal invitation to attend the program. Selected and confirmed applicants will receive support for travel expenses, including coach airfare and two-night hotel for each of the three in-person sessions in Washington DC.
