ACC Past President Leonard S. Dreifus, MD, MACC, passed away on March 30 at the age of 92 in his home in Florida. Dreifus and his wife, Seline, are well-known for their philanthropic work, especially the gracious donation of the "Man Helping Man" sculpture installed at Heart House in Washington, DC.

Use of Palliative Care on the Rise in Veterans With Severe HF

August 8, 2016

The use of palliative care in veterans with severe heart failure (HF) doubled over the course of six years, according to a research letter published July 6 in JAMA Cardiology. The study, conducted from 2007 to 2013, looked at 4,474 patients with severe HF. Overall, 51.2 percent of HF patients died within one year of hospitalization.

Study Examines Outcomes at VA Hospitals

Older men hospitalized at a Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure (HF) or pneumonia experienced lower 30-day risk-standardized all-cause mortality rates for AMI and HF, but higher 30-day risk-standardized all-cause readmission rates for all three conditions than those treated at non-VA hospitals, according to a study published Feb. 9 in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Study Finds African-American Veterans Have Lower Mortality, CHD Than White Veterans

October 23, 2015

African-American veterans may have lower incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and lower all-cause mortality than white veterans, according to a study published Sept. 18 in Circulation. These results are in contrast with the higher mortality experienced by African-Americans in the general population. The authors write that biological differences, overwhelmed by the socioeconomic disparities in the general population, may be a possible explanation for these racial discrepancies.

The ACC’s long-term advocacy focus has been, and continues to be on the ultimate wellbeing of patients, both in the U.S. and around the globe. One need only look at some of the College’s recent efforts to make this point: advocacy for funding for cardiovascular research; advocacy for the use of scientific registries for quality improvement; advocacy for pulse ox legislation and smoke-free laws.
