Intensive vs. Standard Blood Pressure Lowering in Older Hypertensive Patients

Intensive blood pressure (BP)-lowering treatment decreased major adverse cardiovascular events in older hypertensive patients, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. However, intensive BP lowering increased risk of renal failure. The authors said, "It appears that in older patients, the cardiovascular benefit of intensive therapy may come at the expense of increase in adverse events, and clinicians should carefully consider risk versus benefit for the individual patient."
