The Globalization of Health Information in Different Languages: New Frontier With JACC Portuguese

The availability of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) in Portuguese may be an opportunity for cardiologists and interns-in-training to have access to the most up-to-date and significant cardiology information, according to an article published Jan. 21 in JACC. Edimar Alcides Bocchi, PhD, explains that a large portion of doctors in other countries do not understand English or are not native English speakers, which limits their understanding of published papers. They note that this language barrier prevents access to the most current information, resulting in negative consequences for the entire local health care system. "Readers in countries where Portuguese is the primary language can update their skills and knowledge in line with the latest international thinking and gain knowledge of clinical studies to use for the benefit of their patients and local health care system," Bocchi writes. "In addition, providing local medical practitioners with access to relevant and attractive publications should help to remove health policies and medical practices that are not evidence-based."
