The Essential Role of Leadership Development
In order to deliver high-quality care at the patient level, it may be essential for cardiovascular professionals to have the requisite tools and experiences to lead at a team- or systems-based level, according to a Fellows in Training (FITs)/Early Career column published Oct. 22 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Andrew M. Freeman, MD, FACC, et al., illustrate how leadership development programming shapes and influences the cardiovascular practitioner, and examine key components of ACC's two-year Leadership Academy program. They note that FITs and Early Career professionals are at a critical yet vulnerable juncture within their career, as studies have shown the crucial role of mentorship in cultivating the professional growth and development of these young physicians.
In a response to the column, Patrick T. O'Gara, MD, MACC, comments that "there is widespread recognition of the need to develop physician leaders who are trained and mentored in several nonclinical competencies that are critical to organizational and health system management." He adds, "This may be a propitious time to re-examine the competencies expected of our cardiovascular trainees and the structures in place to make sure there is proper alignment." Read more.
