Saint Francis Hospital and Heart Center
Program Description:
We are now accepting applications for 4 positions for a 1-year paid fellowship in one of the highest volume and highest quality cardiovascular imaging programs in the nation. All imaging modalities are housed under cardiology in the only dedicated Heart Hospital in New York State. This 1-year fellowship provides training in Cardiac CT and MRI. A full array of services including nationally renowned interventional, EP, heart failure, and structural heart programs support our cardiovascular imaging services.

Between 6-9 CMR, 25-30 cardiac CTAs (50% coronary CTA, 30% structural, 20% EP and others), and 10-15 coronary calcium scores are performed daily and our volume continues to grow. 11,000 studies per year allow for achievement level III Cardiac CT and level II-III Cardiac MRI qualifications. Trainees will gain hands- on experience in scanning and post-processing using a variety of cutting edge softwares for image analysis.

Cardiac CT is performed on state-of-the-art volumetric scanners and includes coronary, structural (large number of clinical and research TAVR, TMVR, tricuspid interventions and left atrial appendage occluder planning) and EP imaging with routine use of CT-FFR and plaque characterization technologies.

Cardiac MRI is performed on state-of-the-art 1.5T and 3.0T scanners with routine use of advanced sequences including parametric mapping, compressed sensing, 4D flow and works-in-progress research sequences. In addition to standard CMR, we perform pharmacologic stress imaging, adult congenital heart disease, arrhythmia imaging, vascular studies as well as CMR in patients with pacemakers/defibrillators.

There are 15 full-time dedicated imaging cardiologists board certified in multiple modalities supported by a staff of imaging analysts, MRI/imaging physicists, and biostatisticians. Research is encouraged and supported.

Saint Francis is ranked #24 in the nation for Cardiology and Heart Surgery in the US News & World Report. Saint Francis is located in beautiful Roslyn, Long Island and just 30-40 minutes away from New York City

Training is comprised of 50% nuclear cardiology, 40% echocardiography, and the opportunity for exposure to cardiac MRI and cardiac CT in the remaining 10%.

Nuclear cardiology training includes:
  • High-volume in cardiac PET including perfusion with quantitative myocardial blood flow for evaluation of ischemia, microvascular disease, and coronary allograft vasculopathy.
  • FDG-PET for viability, infection, and inflammation imaging for evaluation of cardiac sarcoidosis and prosthetic endocarditis.
  • Pioneering laboratory in cardiac SPECT-CT for ischemia, PYP for amyloidosis, and MUGA.
Echocardiography training includes:
  • Transesophageal echocardiography including pre-procedural TEE prior to valvular heart disease interventions and transthoracic echocardiography interpretation including 3D echo and strain.
The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary conferences including stress testing/invasive coronary angiography correlation conference, sarcoidosis clinical-imaging conference, endocarditis team conference, multimodality imaging lecture series, and echocardiography lecture series. There will also be opportunities to participate with a leading clinical imaging research group with multiple NIH grants and funding from several industry partners as well as a large volume of cardiac imaging publications in top journals every year.

The fellowship provides level III training in nuclear cardiology and echocardiography (assuming the fellow has achieved level II training in echocardiography during their general cardiology fellowship).  One candidate is accepted annually. Eligible applicants include those who have graduated from or will graduate from a US cardiology fellowship program. Applicants should submit their CV, personal statement, USMLE scores (photocopy is fine), and recent photo to all in one document to pengel@umich.edu.  Three letters of recommendation should be sent directly from the letter writers/designee to the same email address above.  Admission is on a rolling basis.

Minneapolis Heart Institute (Minneapolis, MN)
Program Description:
The Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Fellowship at the Minneapolis Heart Institute is a 12 month program designed to train cardiovascular specialists in Advanced Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (CCT). At the end of the Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship, trainees will achieve Level III training requirements according to ACC 2015 ACC 2015 Core Cardiovascular Training Statement and become expert in these 2 areas of cardiac imaging. 1 YEAR CLINICAL

The program is designed as an advanced fellowship position for trainees who have completed a formal three-year general cardiology fellowship. In addition to gaining the relevant knowledge of physics and instrumentation for each modality, fellows will learn to independently acquire, post-process, and interpret CMR and CCT studies.

Fellows have hands-on supervised clinical training, one-on-one teaching sessions with imaging attendings and participate in research and educational activities. The high volume of clinical studies and research opportunities provide fellows an excellent teaching environment. We typically average between 8-10 CMR studies, 25-30 cardiac CTAs (50% coronary CTA, 30% structural, 20% other), and another 15-20 coronary calcium scores at a given day.

In addition to the standard CMR studies for evaluating cardiac morphology and function, advanced techniques including pharmacologic stress imaging, adult congenital heart disease and arrhythmia substrate imaging are routinely performed. Minneapolis Heart Institute has a strong collaboration with NIH-NHLBI through is also one of the few academic centers that offers state-of-the-art CMR sequences for quantitative myocardial blood flow, and advanced pulse sequences which allow for complete free-breathing CMR exam with real-time cine imaging for patients with arrhythmia and delayed enhancement in those with pacemakers/defibrillators.

Cardiac CT studies include evaluation of coronary artery disease (with ad-hoc FFR-CT is available for the functional assessment of coronary artery stenosis), pulmonary venous anatomy, cardiac morphology and function for many complex valvular cases, large number of TAVR, TMVR and tricuspid interventions planning.
