ACC Backs SAVE Act; Bipartisan Gun Reform Now Law

*June 27, 2022 Update: President Biden signed the bipartisan gun control legislation into law on June 25.

The ACC continues to express support for the Safety From Violence for Healthcare Employees (SAVE) Act (H.R. 7961), a bill introduced by Reps. Madeleine Dean (PA-04) and Larry Bucshon (IN-08) that would provide federal protections for health workers facing violence and intimidation in the workplace.

In a letter from ACC President Edward T. A. Fry, MD, FACC, regarding the bill, the College noted:

“It is essential that we protect those that have dedicated their professional lives to caring for others and ensure their ability to perform their essential duties without the threat of harm to themselves or their patients." The letter went on to say that "the threat of health care workplace violence also negatively impacts clinician wellness and further strains the already contracted health care workforce.” Read the full letter here.

On a related note, bipartisan gun control legislation is moving in Congress, with the Senate passing a bill on June 23 that would enhance background checks for gun buyers under 21, end the “boyfriend loophole,” establish criminal penalties for straw purchases and gun trafficking, and provide funding for crisis intervention programs and mental health services in states. The “life-saving” legislation passed the House on June 24, sending the bill to President Joe Biden’s desk.

The ACC earlier this month issued a statement addressing both gun violence and workplace safety, highlighting the College's continued commitment to addressing the crisis. Read the full statement here.
