Intensive Provides Insights Into Evolving Field of Critical Care Cardiology

critical care cardiology

With the continued evolution of contemporary cardiac intensive care unit (CICU), a well as improvements in technology, knowledge base and skill sets necessary to care for CICU patients, this year's ACC.23/WCC intensive chaired by Robert Roswell, MD, FACC, and David Michael Dudzinski, MD, FACC, will address critical care cardiology, with a specific focus on cardiogenic shock (Part I) and global approaches to cardiac arrest care (Part II).

In Part I of the Intensive, attendees will get a closer look at cardiogenic shock – one of the leading causes of mortality in the CICU – from the perspective of general consultative cardiology. Highlights include the 54th Annual Louis F. Bishop Keynote from Susanna Price, MD, PhD, on the evolution of the CICU, as well as interactive case presentations specifically addressing the cardiologist's role. Speakers will also shed light on novel devices and innovations that can enhance patient care.

Global differences in clinical practice for managing cardiac arrest will take center stage in Part II. While cardiac arrest has mortality rates that are as high as 50% and is an intense focus for research, best clinical practice remains controversial as a result of evolving guidelines and clear gaps in evidence. The session will offer perspectives from global leaders from Africa, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Canada and provide a forum for discussion around areas of uncertainty, as well as health equity, in the management of this high-risk condition.

"The field of critical care cardiology is an evolving specialty that meets the challenges of the transformation of the contemporary CICU in terms of case mix, device technology, complexity and staffing," says Roswell, who also co-chairs ACC's Critical Care Cardiology Section along with Michael A. Solomon, MD, MBA, FACC. "We are truly excited to delve into some of the biggest and most challenging issues facing cardiac critical care during this dedicated Intensive and throughout ACC.23/WCC."

Acknowledging the changing landscape of the CICU, along with the implications for staffing and training cardiologists with critical care expertise, the ACC launched the Critical Care Cardiology Section in 2022. The Section is designed to be the primary home for the growing number of cardiovascular professionals interested in CICU level care, as well as all aspects of acute cardiac care.
