Editors' Corner | Broadening Insights: SCAD, Obesity, AI and More
Just a decade ago, spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) was an overlooked condition. In this month's cover story, we learn it's the most common cause of myocardial infarction (MI) in women younger than 50, accounting for as much as 35% of MIs in this group, and among women who are pregnant or have recently given birth.
Along with providing insights into the latest understanding of SCAD and its precipitating factors, Sharonne N. Hayes, MD, FACC, Marysia S. Tweet, MD, MS, FACC, and Esther SH Kim, MD, FACC, discuss diagnostic challenges and treatment strategies, as well as underscore the importance of cardiac rehabilitation in this population.
Also in this issue, we highlight two new ACC clinical guidance documents that offer timely recommendations for managing obesity across the cardiovascular spectrum: Concise Clinical Guidance on the medical management of obesity and a Scientific Statement focused on treating obesity in adults with heart failure.
Additionally, For the FITs explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming cardiovascular imaging and the opportunities and challenges this presents for careers of emerging cardiologists. We also explore:
- The disproportionate burden of diabetes and heart health in Hispanic/Latino communities and how effective solutions call for early intervention as well as expanding culturally competent health care and services.
- Creating one's own training pathway in cardio-obstetrics.
- TAVR in aortic regurgitation and whether a "dedicated" device is on the horizon.
We also share a case study of how an ambulatory surgical center (ASC) set the bar for safety, quality and value from day one by earning before they opened the new Cardiac Cath Lab Accreditation designations developed by ACC Accreditation Services for freestanding outpatient facilities, along with the NCDR's CV ASC Registry Suite. Corewell Health Heart and Vascular Surgery Center – Grand Rapids is the first ASC to earn the new accreditation for PCI and EP.
Don't miss a special piece about the new ACC Benevolence Fund established by M. Eugene Sherman, MD, MACC, that will support trainees and fellows in times of need in the Pulse of ACC, and in Number Check learn about the new Jamal S. Rana Cardiometabolic Health Global Research Award. Finally, be sure to turn to page 8 to learn about the new look for JACC in print and online, part of ongoing efforts to best serve the cardiovascular community.
Enjoy this issue and the dog days of summer!
